My Ancestors
Lilian Estcourt SMITH (1882-1971)
Born on 13 Apr 1882 in Burnham Market, Norfolk
Died on 03 Apr 1971 in Ingoldisthorpe, Norfolk
Spouse: Arthur John MARTIN (1860 – 1932)
My great grandmother, Lilian is the daughter of William Claxton SMITH (1838 – 1916) and Charlotte JARVIS (1842 – 1911). She had eleven siblings (5 brothers and 6 sisters).
She was christened on 25th April 1882 at St Mary's Church, Burnham Westgate. The family are listed in the 1901 census living in Burnham Market, with Lilian aged 9. Her father was the Birth and Death Registrar of the district and it appears they were living in government accommodation.

In 1906 she married Arthur John MARTIN, a farmer from Barmer. They had three daughters Leonie Estcourt Martin, Vera May Martin in 1907 and my great Aunt who still lives in Norfolk born several years later in 1918. The family were listed in the 1911 census living in Barmer and Lilian had a Lady's companion called Winifred Creasy which means they must have been reasonably well off!
Lilian lived to a good age and even got to see the birth of her first great grandchild. She died in Ingoldisthorpe in 1971 living near her daughter Vera who had subsequently married a local farmer called Hugh Wharton.
