My Wharton Ancestors
Thomas Wharton (1797-1828)
Born on 22 Oct 1797 in North Lopham, Norfolk
Died on 13 Dec 1878 in Ringstead, Norfolk
Thomas was born on 22 October 1797 in North Lopham and christened in North Lopham on 25 March 1798.
He was one of 9 children born to George Wharton (1760-1837) and Mary Burrell (1760-1839)
Siblings
George WHARTON (1783 – 1871)
William WHARTON (1785 – 1862)
Lydia WHARTON (1788 – 1863)
Letitia WHARTON (1789 – 1797)
John WHARTON (1790 – 1861)
Stephen WHARTON (1793 – 1812)
Elizabeth WHARTON (1797 – 1797)
Philip WHARTON (1800 – 1802)
On 14th April 1820, he married Susan Porter (1801-1849) in North Lopham. Not much is now about Susan Porter but presumably she was a local girl. Together they had 11 children and were settled in Ringstead, Norfolk for most of their lives.
Children
In the 1841 Census, Aged 44 Thomas and Sarah were living at Court Yard Farm in Ringstead, Norfolk with their children and he was listed as a Farmer.
The 1851 Census, aged 54 shows them still living in Ringstead on a 700 acre farm employing 16 men and 7 boys. They also employed a Housekeeper called Sarah Fisk (born 1799 in South Lopham) who I later found buried near them in Ringstead Church. The 1861 Census, when he was 64, Sarah Fisk is still their housekeeper at Court Yard Farm in Ringstead. Finally in the 1871 census they are still at Court Yard Farm (without Sarah Fisk who presumably had passed away).
The Courtyard Farm was owned by the Le Strange family.
Thomas died on 13 December 1878 aged 81 years, and is buried at Ringstead Church.
