My Wharton Ancestors
Henry William John WHARTON (1864 – 1939)
Born on 3 Jan 1864 in Ingoldisthorpe, Norfolk,
Died in 1939 in Queensland, Australia
Henry was one of my very first "brick walls" when I started researching family history, back in the days when the internet was not even heard of it was hard to be able to trace ancestors movements. Henry was born on 3 January 1864 and was the 3rd son of Thomas Wharton and Elizabeth Ann May. He had
10 other siblings (6 sisters and 4 brothers).
Siblings
Elizabeth Mary WHARTON1852 – 1862
Thomas George WHARTON 1854 – 1902
Ellen WHARTON 1856 – 1916
Kate May WHARTON1858 – 1943
Lucy WHARTON 1861 – 1863
Male WHARTON1863 – 1863
Herbert Edgar WHARTON 1865 – 1950
Arthur Philip WHARTON 1867 – 1962
Florence E WHARTON 1869 – 1871
Rosa Lily WHARTON 1871 – 1963
I first find a trace of him in the 1871 census where he is boarding with private school in Brancaster, Norfolk at the age of 7. Ten years later in 1881 he is renting a room in 21 Marlborough Road, Camberwell, Surrey and working as a Gas Engineeer! It's sad to see he hasn't spent much time with his other siblings and parents but i am sure that he did as the census are just snapshots in time over decades. Years ago when I was researching prior to having the use of the internet this is where my trail ran dry and I could find no other trace of Henry.
However, with the power of the internet and a few years after I first found him in the census, I discover that he emigrated to Australia and lived the rest of his life in Queensland. He took a boat called the" John Elder" to Sydney, Australia and arrived on 3 May 1885. Two years later he had met and married Pauline Amelia WEST (1868 -1925). Pauline was born in Somerset and must have travelled out with Henry. In 1887 they were married on 12 April adn they had three children.
Henry Thomas WHARTON 1889 – 1956
Clarence WHARTON 1898 – 1940
Olive May WHARTON 1902 –
The family settled in Mackay, Queensland, Australia and Henry died on 18 April 1939 in Queensland. He was 75 years old.
If you are reading this and a descendant of my Great Grand Uncle Henry Wharton who emigrated to Australia, then please do get in touch, it would be wonderful to hear from you and make further connections with family from as far as Australia.
