My Wharton Ancestors
Herbert Edgar WHARTON
Born on 22 Oct 1865 in Thornham, Norfolk
Died on 29 Jun 1950 in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales
Married twice to (1) Mary MAY and (2) Jessie MATTHEWS
Herbert Edgar WHARTON is the 4th Son of Thomas George WHARTON and Elizabeth Ann MAY. He was born in Thornham, Norfolk and had 10 other siblings (6 sisters and 4 brothers). By the time he was born his parents had turn to the Methodist faith and he was baptised in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Walsingham on 9 Oct 1867.
Siblings
In 1871 the family were living at Ling Farm in Thornham. Ten years later at the age of 15 in 1881 Herbert appeared boarding at 22 Limes Grove, Lewisham, London with his older brother Thomas George Wharton. Thomas was an auctioneer in the city and Herbert was learning to be an Auctioneer's Clerk. He didn't stay long in London though and soon returned back to Norfolk after his marriage to become a farmer.
He married a girl called Mary MAY on 22 November 1888. Mary MAY was his first cousin and her father Thomas MAY was the brother of Herbert's mother Elizabeth Ann May . Mary MAY was born in 1862, St. Paul's Cray, Kent. They lived at Church Farm in Great Bircham. (Te farm is now being used as rental holiday accommodation).
Herbert and Mary had two children:
Both children were born in Great Bircham, Norfolk so it seems that Herbert moved his family back to Norfolk after his marriage. Although during the 1891 census (the night of 5 April 1891) Mary was visting her sister Hephzibah and her family (Edward Vinson) in St Paul's Cray, Kent. Mary must have been pregnant with Annie at the time and Annie was born on 16 Oct 1891. She left Herbert at home (Church Farm House in Great Bircham) that night with just the cook and housemaid for company. Sadly almost exactly a year later Mary had died on 7 November 1892 at the young age of just 30.
In 1895, Herbert married his second wife, Jessie MATTHEWS. vJessie was the sister of his brother Arthur's wife. They stayed at Church Farm in Great Bircham and are both found their in the 1901 and 1911 census. They had three children together:
I have found Alec living in Melbourne Australia and travelling their when he was about 11, so I believe the whole family at one point was out there but have returned to England at a later date.
Herbert and Jessie have ended up later in life living in Abergavenny in Wales and they both died there. Herbert died on 29 June 1950 at the Victoria Hospital in Abergavenny and five years later Jessie died in the same hospital on 30th May 1955.
Descendants
Sadly I don't think any of Herbert's family went on to have their own children so this branch of the Wharton's has disappeared. However, I have seen a post on a family history website from someone who said that her father in law was the son of Ernest Robert Wharton, She says that his mother Mildred Wagg had his illegitimate child in 1928. Unfortunately this was in 2010 so it is too late to reply but apparently her father in law is alive and well and would be 85 now if is still is with us. I would love to here from this lady, so if you are reading this please get in touch using the contact page! Ernest's father is the brother of my Great grandfather so although we are not direct descendants it would be nice to hear from you.
