My Wharton Ancestors
Thomas George WHARTON (1854 – 1902)
Born about 1854 in Ingoldisthorpe, Norfolk,
Died on 24 Jun 1902 in Bromley, Kent
Thomas was the first son of Thomas George Wharton (1827-1890) and Elizabeth Ann May. He had ten other brothers and sisters.
Siblings
When he was 17 he was found in the 1871 census living in Sevenoaks, Kent with the Sinclair Family as a boarder. He is listed as being an apprentice . Ten years later in 1881 he has moved to 22 Limes Grove, Lewisham (still boarding) and is an Auctioneer. His brother Herbert Edgar Wharton was staying with him at the time.
On 24 August 1881 Thomas married Alice PORRITT in Ingoldisthorpe, Norfolk. Alice was the daughter of William Love PORRIT ,1827 – 1912 and Kate READ . Alice was born about 1858 in Burnham, Norfolk. A year later he was listed as a Land Surveyor but also still was an Auctioneer.
Thomas and Alice had five children and none appear to have had any children themselves so this branch of the Wharton tree appears to have disappeared.
In the 1891 Census the family are living in a house called "INGOLDISTHORPE" in Underhill Road, Camberwell (now in Dulwich, SE22 London). Ten years later the family had moved to live in a house called "SUNNEYCOURT" in Highland Road, Sevenoaks. Thomas had done very well for himself by this stage and they were employing a cook, 2 housemaids and also a governess for the children! Sadly though, Thomas passed away at the young age of 48 on 24 June 1902. The probate said he also had accommodation at 7-8 Ironmonger Lane, London (presumably to do with his work) and his will left over £25,000.

- Thomas George Love WHARTON 1882 – 1882
Thomas was born in London but then died shortly after in Norfolk probably just a few weeks old. Thomas is the only one of the children who I can find a baptism for. - Hildred Alice Wharton 1884 – 1974
Hildred was a nurse and lived in Calgary, Canada for most of her adult life. She returned and died in the 1970s in Norfolk. She was a spinster. - Thomas Reginald WHARTON 1886 – 1899
I have a note written down that Thomas Reginald died due to an accident. He was 3 years old. - Dorothy M WHARTON 1888 – 1971
Dorothy married Thomas Geoffrey Caddick-Adams, they lived in Kensington for most of their lives I think. They had no children. - William Cecil Wharton 1889 –
He was born in Camberwell but I cannot find any further trace. There is a chance he MAY have emigrated and had children.
